At times, we’ve all thought of our mothers as the Wicked Witch of the West. Hamilton Meserve’s mother really was the Wicked Witch – character actress Margaret Hamilton, who 71 years ago terrified Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz..
Since then, the Wicked Witch has “scared the bejesus” out of five generations,
Meserve says. His mom made such a lasting impression, the American Film Institute in 2003 ranked the witch No. 4 on its list of 50 greatest screen villains.
Hamilton, who died in 1985 at age 82, had a great sense of humor and could make fun of herself,” says Meserve, who was 3 when she filmed Oz in 1938-39.
Like most kids, actress Donna Vivino grew up with Oz and was a big fan of Hamilton’s Wicked Witch.
“I thought it really cool. I actually liked the witch growing up. I thought she was awesome. I gravitated toward her rather than Glinda [the good witch],” says Vivino, who now stars as Elphaba, the young Wicked Witch, in the touring company of Broadway’s hit musical Wicked, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
Wicked – in its seventh year at Manhattan’s George Gershwin Theatre and returning to Miami on Wednesday for a three-week run at the Adrienne Arsht Center – is still incredibly popular. The New York production recently broke its own Broadway box office record, grossing more than $2 million in one week.
There’s little comparison between Hamilton’s Wicked Witch and Vivino’s, except perhaps for the green skin.
“It takes about 20-25 minutes to get my makeup done and my wig, and about a half-an-hour to take it off,” says Vivino, who’s been with Wicked a little more than two years.
Wicked is also very different from Oz.
“The Wizard of Oz is told through the eyes of Dorothy. This is told through a different lens,” says Vivino, who made her Broadway debut at age 7 in the 1987 original production of Les Misérables.
Wicked is about the early relationship between Elphaba and Glinda. “People keep coming back to this show. It’s the story, the friendship between these two women.”
It seems most everyone has seen Wicked, but not Hamilton Meserve, now an antiques dealer with his wife in small-town Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
“We just so rarely get into New York City,” Meserve says. We want to see it. I’m ashamed I haven’t.”

IF YOU GO
Wicked runs March 3-21 at Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House, Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami.

Roll With It, Baby

I’m crossing my fingers, toes, eyes and whatever else I can cross, in hopes that things are settling down in my life and I can squeeze a relate-able, decently spelled and grammatically correct blogpost out.
So here is what’s up in my world. Trust me, it’s not so exciting.
My mom, after having a heart attack, had a stroke. Isn’t that terrific? She came home from the hospital for a day before a return engagement at a different venue. By the way, she’s coming home today. Thank you for all your well wishes and prayers!! You people rock! XOXO
Here’s what we are thinking. And this is just a heads up for those of you who have health issues or know people with health issues and are on the fence about getting this wonderful inoculation. As many of you now know, my mom has a heart condition. She has had it for 20 years. She went, about a week before this latest heart attack, to get that H1N1 shot. You know the one. The one that so many doctors and pharmaceutical companies were regaling us with the fact that if we didn’t get this shot, we’d probably get sick and die. Or something like that.
Anyway. She dragged herself over to where they were sticking people. And, she got stuck.
Less than a week later, she had a heart attack.
Coincidence?
I’m afraid it’s WAY TOO coincidental to be a mere fluke. In fact, after my mother had a little conversation with someone from the FDA, it seems that there is a slight percentage of people with heart conditions that did, in fact, have major…MAJOR…life altering complications. Due to this fucking shot that I REFUSED to get for my kids and myself.
The FDA will be doing some more research regarding this little incident and we will probably never find out anything conclusive. But, my wee little, pea sized brain, was convinced that this was the reason. When I voiced it to the darling little cardiac intern, she hmmm’d it. Even she said that there was a small, miniscule chance that this was the reason.
The sad thing is, up until this heart attack, my mom had started feeling better from her cardiac arrest that she had a few years back. And now? Well, I’d say this is a ginormous hurdle that she’ll have to try to overcome. Lucky for her, the stroke didn’t do much damage. So she just has to concentrate on remembering to hold her fork right and getting her heart to not fail. That’s it.
Then there is me. Let’s talk about me.
Graves Disease. A mild form. But really? With a name like Graves…it sounds like the only mild form of it is death. So, I’m on an anti-thyroid, Methimazole and a beta-blocker, Propranolol. They space me out, give me awful sleep and make me feel funky. Good times friends. Good times.
Now there is the little matter of children. More specifically, my oldest son.
What the heck is wrong with this kid? Flunking out of school?
I’m having him tested at school for an IEP. To see if he is frustrated due to some sort of learning problem and perhaps that is why he isn’t doing well. The only response I can get from him is…and I quote…I don’t care.
Yes. Kids. Aren’t they terrific.
Oh, just you wait, all my friends with wee little ones. You think it’s tough now.
I wish that I could wish myself back in time and freeze myself there. I’d go back to being 23. Back before I met my ex. So, before kids. I’d take the money my grandfather left me. I’d pack up my little white Honda Civic and hightail it to California with my friend, Anna.
Although, I’d probably be in the same situation with kids as I am now only, with a different baby daddy. But, on the plus side, I’d be somewhere warm and sunny and perhaps with better child support. Not this mess of Michigan shit.
Anyways, that’s what’s happening in my neck of the woods. Just rolling with the punches. What’s happening in yours?

Will Smith Looking to Remake Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion?
Sunday, February 28th, 2010Possibility the most interesting story today. Latino Review got a scoop from one of their insiders who says Will Smith is working on a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1941 thriller Suspicion. The film follows a shy young English woman who marries a charming gentleman, then begins to suspect that he’s trying to kill her. It was originally based on Francis Iles’ book Before the Fact, which it sounds like they may go back to for the remake. It seems like it’s only in the very early development stages and that Paramount may end up getting the project, but then again Will Smith switches between films often, so it could happen sooner than later. As far as I know (correct me if I’m wrong), this is one of the first remakes of a Hitchcock movie we’ve seen recently (give or take Gus Van Sant’s Psycho). As far as I know (correct me if I’m wrong), this is one of the first remakes of a Hitchcock movie we’ve seen recently (give or take Gus Van Sant’s Psycho ). Smith is reportedly producing and starring in the remake (in the role originally played by Cary Grant), but they don’t have any details about who is writing or directing. I haven’t seen Suspicion (which I need to do now), but I’m not inherently opposed to this like I know probably should be. I just feel like having Will Smith handling this remake is a good thing, because he’ll respect the original film and also actually try to prevent this from being ruined, though I’m sure not everyone will agree.
We’ll definitely let you know if this actually comes together at Paramount (or another studio), but for now it’s time to voice your opinion on whether you think a remake of a Hitchcock film is acceptable or not?

Taylor Lautner is taking a serious look at all the projects he’s signed on for in the past few months. Between Max Steel and Stretch Armstrong , his future looks overtly campy and bright, but according to an exclusive report from Vulture one of these projects won’t survive.
The actor has decided to drop out of Max Steel in favor of the other toy adaptation, Stretch Armstrong. Why would he do such a thing? It was a battle between Mattel and Hasbro and in this case the latter walked away victorious. Hasbro was making the necessary moves to get their film into development a lot faster than the competition and Lautner was impressed with their urgency.
Also, when it comes to toy movie track records Hasbro does have the upper hand, i.e. Transformers , G.I. Joe , the upcoming Battleship , and even Candyland are all locked and loaded. What has Mattel produced that’s anywhere near that success level besides an array of straight to DVD Barbie movies?
Even though Stretch Armstrong makes more sense in terms of business savvy, the actual character development is what worries me. Lautner doesn’t look anything like the toy or the image of Armstrong we grew up with. I guess his Twilight fans will overlook that fact to make this movie a huge success regardless of its connection to the original toy.
What do you think of Lautner dropping out of Max Steel? Did he make the right decision?

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: February 28, 2010
Sunday, February 28th, 2010This weekend the box office stays at Shutter Island; Katee Sackhoff gets her own pilot; Freida Pinto gets involved in the War of the Gods; Woody Allen teams with Owen Wilson and Ryan Reynolds and Nicolas Cage become cavemen in The Croods!
This weekend the box office stays at Shutter Island; Katee Sackhoff gets her own pilot; Freida Pinto gets involved in the War of the Gods; we get the team-ups we’ve always wanted – Woody Allen along with Owen Wilson and Ryan Reynolds and Nicolas Cage as cavemen in The Croods!
Box Office
Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese remained kings of the box office as Shutter Island banked another $21 million to bring its total to $75 million. It looks like this just might out-gross The Departed to be the duo’s highest grossing film.
Bruce Willis’ Cop Out was second with a weekend take of $17 million. The film also stars Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott. Cop Out, as every review and article that I’ve read states, is the first film that Kevin Smith has directed that he didn’t write. I just didn’t want to feel left out on that one!

Horror remake The Crazies was third with an estimated take of $15 million.
Avatar finally crossed the $700 million barrier this weekend. The James Cameron film’s total now stands at $705 million after grossing $12.5 million over the weekend.
Rom-com Valentine’s Day hit $100 million after taking $8 million over the weekend. Never underestimate the power of love. I think there might be a song in there somewhere!
Percy Jackson upped his cumulative gross to $70 million. The century mark is looking difficult, but if foreign grosses are strong you might get to see Pierce Brosnan as a horse’s ass again.
Dear John has now banked almost $72 million, and The Wolfman’s total is hovering at $57 million after making just under $4 million over the weekend.
Dwayne Johnson’s Tooth Fairy has now clocked up $53 million, while Crazy Heart starring Jeff Bridges and Colin Farrell has now managed to score $25 million.
Movie News
1. Fomer Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff is set to star in the pilot for a new crime drama from Richard Hatem.
According to The Hollywood Reporter:
“The crime drama centers on a beautiful female detective (Sackhoff) who teams with a disgraced ex-cop to solve crimes and untangle the conspiracy that sent him underground.”
So, it’s kind of like The X-Files.

Sackhoff is currently starring in 24, and producers on the show have said that she should be able to star in her own show, if the Jack Bauer series returns for a ninth run.
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
2. Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto has signed on to director Tarsem Singh’s War of the Gods.
According to Variety;
“(The) story follows a young warrior Theseus who leads his men into battle with the immortal Greek gods to defeat evil and the powerful elder gods of the Titans in order to save mankind. Pinto will portray Phaedra, an oracle priestess who must join Theseus — played by Henry Cavill (”The Tudors”) — on his quest to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting.”
The film which starts shooting in April was written by Jason Keller and Christian Gudegast.
Pinto will next be seen in Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger which also stars Antonio Banderas (Zorro), Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex), Anthony Hopkins and Naomi Watts.
3. Speaking of Woody Allen – the New York auteur has apparently nabbed Owen Wilson to star in his next, as yet untitled project.

France’s First Lady (and model, singer and actress) Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is also believed to be starring in the film, which like all of Allen’s projects are kept under wraps until the last minute.
I’ll go out on a limb and say there’ll be no CGI and that it won’t be shot in 3D.

4. The buddy cop genre is something that refuses to die. This weekend’s Cop Out offers an affectionate comedic take on the genre, and there’s now news that Ashton Kutcher and Jamie Foxx are set to star in their own buddy adventure called Streets of Fire (not to be confused with the recent Val Kilmer movie Streets of Blood).

“It’s about a straight arrow Chicago cop with anger issues (Foxx) who teams up with a brash and cocky one (Kutcher), and the two “become anything other than friends.” They stumble into a gang of killers intercepting the city’s drugs, and reluctantly agree to work together on the case, only to find out that the vicious gang is actually made up of dirty cops.”
So far, so generic. However, the Justin Britt-Gibson script was on the 2009 Black List (great unproduced screenplays) so it might add something new.

5. Comic book lovers Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds are set to share the screen as cavemen (well, their voices at least) in The Croods.
The CG animated film is ” a comedy that pits a prehistoric patriarch (Cage) against a forward-thinking outsider (Reynolds).”
According to Variety:
“Cage stars as Crug, who cautiously leads his family beyond his comfort zone after an earthquake destroys their home. While attempting to navigate the dangerous and unfamiliar world, Crug butts heads with Reynolds’ nomad, who charms Crug’s clan — especially his eldest daughter — with his (relatively) modern-minded ways.”
The Croods opens March 30, 2012, in stereoscopic 3D!

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

Robert Pattinson sat down with MTV to discuss his new movie the other day and the star admitted that he’s not a huge 3D fan and that he’s actually been avoiding seeing a lot of movies that use it. Damn! Right there with you, Rob. I go to the movies to see pretty, flat people on big screen and half the time I’m just trying to pay attention the the story. A pair of 3D glasses just seem like an additional obstacle. I’m over the 3D craze 100%. Lets just let movies be movies.
One kind of ironic thing about this statement coming from Robert? He’s currently working on Breaking Dawn, which is being filmed in 3D. Whoops.
