Dozens of gay South Florida civic leaders are furious that a Grammy-winning DJ and a major Miami Beach nightclub group have again scheduled a dance party at Mansion that they fear will lure gay tourists — and their money — from a Winter Party Festival fundraiser on March 7.

Winter Party is a six-day annual festival that attracts 10,000 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people — many of them from out of town — to South Beach, said chairman Chad Richter, who accuses New York-based DJ Peter Rauhofer and Miami Beach’s Opium Group of piggy-backing on the fundraiser’s tourist draw.

Winter Party events usually sell out. This year’s host hotel, the Doubletree Surfcomber Hotel Miami-South Beach, already is fully booked for the March 3-8 festival, Richter said.

Rauhofer checks the calendar for major gay events "and just swoops in," Richter said.

In November 2008, Rauhofer produced a South Beach "Main Event” dance party at Mansion in direct competition with White Party Week’s Noche Blanca fundraiser for Care Resource, Florida’s largest AIDS service agency. Four months later, he held another dance party at Mansion that competed with the 2009 Winter Party Festival’s Sunday night event at Cameo nightclub on Washington Avenue.

orbit2 Two years ago, 1,910 people attended Winter Party’s Cameo party, which grossed $112,000. In 2009, when Rauhofer staged his dance party the same night, only 1,500 people attended the Cameo party. Gross revenue dropped to $76,000, Richter said. That was in contrast to other 2009 Winter Party events, which did not lose attendance.

Winter Party’s profits benefit the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and local gay charities including Miami Beach Gay Pride Festival, Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and Pridelines Youth Services. Rauhofer’s for-profit dance parties — which target the same demographic as Winter Party — benefit the DJ and Opium Group.

"The Opium Group should care . . . about what’s happening here in our community. It’s not just about dollars," said Babak Movahedi, owner of MOVA lounge off Lincoln Road. He and Richter are among 25 local gay activists who signed an open letter from the Task Force to Rauhofer and Opium Group, asking them to not counter-schedule another event against Winter Party in 2011.

"When they see that so many people care about this in our community, they should think twice about it," Movahedi said.

SexyNeither Rauhofer nor Opium Group marketing manager Carlos Correal returned phone calls seeking comment. Vanessa Menkes, Opium Group publicist, said by e-mail that she is in Israel for a family funeral and unable to give a telephone interview.

Rauhofer also declined a request via Facebook.

"Sorry, I won’t be eligible for this interview as my party @ Mansion has NOTHING to do with Winter Party," Rauhofer responded to Miami.com blogger Juan Lopez .

Richter believes Rauhofer’s planned March 7 party has everything to do with Winter Party.

"Sunday night is the biggest, most profitable night of the festival," Richter said.

Winter Party was conceived in 1993 as a volunteer, community-based fundraiser to support gay rights in Miami-Dade County.

orbit9 The first beach party in 1994 netted $50,000. In March 2003, the festival had grown to several events and generated about $200,000 in profits for its then-owner, the Gay Foundation of South Florida (originally the Dade Human Rights Foundation). That group, in turn, gave grants to the gay film festival, Fort Lauderdale’s gay and lesbian community center and Pridelines, a support group for LGBT teens.

The bottom fell out in 2004 when the mismanaged Gay Foundation suddenly closed. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the nation’s oldest gay civil-rights group, paid the debts in exchange for the foundation’s assets — its annual recognition dinner and Winter Party.

The Task Force agreed to keep one-third of the profits and give two-thirds to South Florida gay nonprofits. The local money is distributed through the Dade Community Foundation’s GLBT Community Projects Fund.

Richter fears this year’s Winter Party revenue will be worse than last year because the Sunday night party won’t be on South Beach. In 2009, Opium Group bought Cameo and told Winter Party planners it wouldn’t be available for this year’s festival.

"They said they have a very successful straight night [on Sundays at Mansion] and they’re going to move it to Cameo and give Peter Mansion, which means there’s no venue for us," Richter said. "They’re going to push us off the Beach."

Instead, Winter Party will hold its Sunday dance event, Orbit, featuring DJs Tracy Young and Boris at The Terrace above Club Space in downtown Miami. Shuttle buses will run all night between Space and the Surfcomber.

Richter fears that if revenue from this year’s Winter Party substantially drops, the Task Force might reconsider future festivals.

"If the festival doesn’t do well this year, we’re not going to pull the plug," said Russell Roybal, the Task Force’s deputy executive director of external relations. "We may try to do things differently in terms of the revenue we’re raising, but we’re not going to walk away from South Florida."

The film stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill. Sample is included below, size is 1CD, check it out!

PLOT: In a world 10 years into the future, vampires make up the vast majority of the population with only 5% of the human race remaining. This presents particular challenges as the vampires’ food supply – human blood – is dwindling and rationing is now the norm. There is growing evidence that vampires deprived of an adequate blood supply are themselves evolving into wild, vile creatures that attack anyone and anything in order to survive. Dr. Edward Dalton, a vampire and hematologist who works for a pharmaceutical firm, has been working on finding an artificial blood supply that will meet the vampire society’s needs. He is sympathetic to humans and sees his work as a way of alleviating their suffering but his views on finding a solution change considerably when he meets someone who found a way to transform himself from being a vampire to again take human form.

Brandon’s Sundance 2010 Review: Rodrigo Cortés’ Buried

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

One location. One actor. One phenomenal filmmaking achievement. Directed by Rodrigo Cortes, starring Ryan Reynolds, Buried is the story of Paul Conroy who, after his convoy is attacked in Iraq, is buried alive inside a coffin with only a lighter and a cell phone. That’s it. For 94 minutes, we, the audience, are inside that coffin with Paul. As impossible as it might sound, it works. It’s tense and horrifying. Claustrophobic, shocking, and awe-inspiring — if not always because of the script, then because of the filmmaking. Buried’s directing, cinematography, editing, and score all act in concert to form a remarkably singular vision. Rodrigo Cortes’ confidence and sheer talent are the paramount reasons why this film is so successful. The film is not without its problems, though. Rodrigo Cortes' Buried

One location. One actor. One phenomenal filmmaking achievement. Directed by Rodrigo Cortes , starring Ryan Reynolds , Buried is the story of Paul Conroy who, after his convoy is attacked in Iraq, is buried alive inside a coffin with only a lighter and a cell phone.

There are some seriously major logic holes that require more than a little suspension of one’s disbelief. Paul is provided a cell phone which receives perfect reception despite it being buried beneath the earth. If, as they say in the movie, he’s only buried a few feet deep instead of many, then why and how does so much dirt come into play later? Wouldn’t using a lighter inside such a confined space with a limited oxygen supply deplete said oxygen supply much quicker than is let on? Buried also borders on offensively manipulative. Some decisions are made by Paul that feel false, though to imagine myself in his position is next to impossible.

Buried walks that fine line between what makes the best story and what feels the most real. I wholeheartedly agree that the story, above all, should take precedent. It’s what films are. It’s what we as the audience respond to. The balance between the two, however, is a tricky get. And it’s this balance that’s off, if just by a bit.

All of the above is certainly not meant to overshadow the overwhelming achievement that is Buried. To transform an inclosed, buried coffin into the entire world of a film is astonishing. To film that world, create obstacles within it — not just without — and produce a taught, intense film of so high a caliber is nothing short of awesome. For Ryan Reynolds to so fully commit to a character so hopelessly ensnared, to carry an entire film on his back like some Atlas of old is simply a joy to watch. That this film is able to not only scare its audience, raising the collective heart rate to well over 180, and fit in a very poignant commentary on the U.S. government’s love affair with corporate bureaucracy is wonderful. Because even though Buried is not without its problems, its accomplishments are so far and above the expected, the imaginable, that it’s nothing short of a success.

It’s a great film. Will it sweep the zeitgeist like Paranormal Activity? Perhaps. It’s certainly one to see in a theatre with an audience. It’s an experience not to be missed, regardless.

A few weeks ago we brought you the first trailer for the upcoming film She’s Out of My League , which looks like a luke warm attempt at a Judd Apatow comedy. The film’s star Jay Barchel has actually appeared in a few Apatow productions so it’s no surprise that he’s been chosen to headline this project. A restricted trailer has just been released for the movie, and as usual it features a lot of F-bombs and stuff that’s not safe for work…

In the comedy She’s Out of My League, Kirk (Baruchel) is an average looking guy who lands a ridiculously attractive girlfriend named Molly (Alice Eve). Not only is Kirk stunned by this development, but so are his friends and family. Everyone is in complete disbelief that someone of her caliber would want to date him. With that cloud of doubt constantly over his head, he must stay on his toes to make the relationship work, because he knows she’s totally out of his league.

This version of the trailer looks like an early cut of the first one, because the majority of the footage is the same, they just left in the F-bombs. There’s actually a scene in it where there’s nothing but people saying that word. Is that the tell tale sign of a comedy? I don’t think so.

Here’s the trailer…

This week:

Mel Gibson returns from the Edge of Darkness but can’t oust Avatar from the top spot; The  Little Fockers are now due at Christmas; Dennis Quaid is knocked out of Knockout but Bill Paxton shows the film some Big Love; Four words: George, Lucas, animated, musical – and is Sex and the City 3 already on the way?

Well – it did it! Avatar has now spent seven weeks at the top of the box office. The James Cameron epic grossed just under $29 million over the weekend. With $593 million in the bank so far it looks like the film will have out-grossed Titanic by the end of the week. It’s also closing in on $2 billion worldwide. These sorts of figures are really mind-boggling, and no matter what you say about the film, what it has managed to do financially is nothing short of amazing. There will be those who throw out the higher ticket price and inflation argument – that’s fine and dandy, but for any film to have this sort of staying power and mass appeal is extremely rare. Both children and adults seem to be loving it. That is truly a rare thing.

Mel Gibson had to settle for second place for his first starring role in eight years. Edge of Darkness opened to just under $18 million. Not a bad gross considering that Avatar is still holding audience attention. Mel could have had a higher gross, but his bread and butter audience is now older, and they usually don’t rush out on opening weekends. We’ll have to wait until next week to see what the long term chances are like.

Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness review

Kristen Bell’s romantic comedy When in Rome was third with a weekend take of $12 million. That’s not terrible (although the reviews certainly are), and probably better than what was expected. It’ll be a DVD movie anyway.

The Tooth Fairy dropped a not unreasonable 37 % from last weekend. With a $9.5 weekend gross and a $25 million total it looks like it’ll top out at $50 million. Did anyone expect anything more?

The Book of Eli shot up another $8 million for a $73 million total. Denzel still has what it takes. It’ll end its run with about $90 million.

It looks like the mixed reviews hurt Legion , as the film dipped by 70% from last weekend. A gross of $6.5 million gives it a $28 million total. It was cheap to produce so it’ll make a profit.

The Lovely Bones brought in another $4.5 million for a $37.7 million total. It’ll likely top out at $50 million.

Sherlock Holmes brought in another $4 million – it’s just under the $200 million mark, and with a sequel on the way it looks like Holmes sweet Holmes.

Alvin and The Chipmunks has now amassed $208 million(!) and Meryl Streep has not got another $100 million hit under her belt.

Movie News

1. Looking forward to seeing Little Fockers? You’re going to have to await a while longer. The comedy sequel has ditched its summer spot for a Christmas debut.

This makes more sense as the first two installments in the series both opened in December and grossed $166 and $279 million respectively.

little-fockers

This means that Matt Damon’s The Adjustment Bureau will now have its July 30th date while Fockers will now face The Green Hornet and Gulliver’s Travels.

Other release date news sees Scott Pilgrim vs. The World open on August 1st. The Michael Cera comedy is directed by Shaun of the Dead’s Edgar Wright.

2. It looks like Dennis Quaid won’t be re-teaming with his Traffic director Steven Soderbergh for Knockout .

It seems that the actor had scheduling difficulties in making the film alongside shark drama Soul Surfer.

In the frame to replace him is Big Love star Bill Paxton.

billpaxton

Meanwhile actor/director Mathieu Kassovitz has also joined the cast of the spy thriller.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

“Knockout” stars Gina Carano as a black ops specialist who goes on the run once she’s been double crossed and framed by her own teammates. Quaid was set to play Carano’s father, so Paxton will now be stepping up into that role.

Allegiances are said to be in flux throughout the picture and may have changed once again as Soderbergh and screenwriter Lem Dobbs (”Kafka,” “The Limey”) have been rewriting and rewriting these past few weeks and previously reported character loyalties may have shifted or changed.”

Knockout which also stars Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender and Michael Angarano starts shooting in Dublin on Monday.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

3. News is out that George Lucas has started work on a CGI animated musical.

george-lucas

News on the project is limited, but it seems that the film is being directed by TMNT’s Kevin Monroe.

David Berenbaum, the man behind the Will Ferrell hit Elf is writing the screenplay, which is believed to feature fairies.

It’s not known if Lucas is behind the story for the film, but as I said before very little is known about the film and Lucas Film have said that it’s too early to comment on the project.

Lucas is currently finishing up his World War II drama Red Tails .

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

4. I know that there’s many a closest Sex and The City fan amongst you, so I’m going to give you the heads up on a rumor that has begun circulating that a third film in the series has already started shooting!

The reason?

Sex_and_the_city

To get another movie in the can before Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristen Davis and Cynthia Nixon get too old!

A source has told the always unreliable The Sun newspaper:

“There is also a third movie on the go. It’s under wraps for publicity reasons. It makes sense to film the second and third movies back to back. The characters will look a lot younger on screen when the third movie is out in a couple of years. They’re keen to look as young as possible because that movie will be their last. They want to go out on a high.”

Is any of this accurate?

Probably not – but if it is then at least we know that we’ve only got one more Sex and the City movie to endure.

If it isn’t, then it probably means that we’ve still got another Sex and the City movie to endure.

Source: The Sun

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.
