Nevis Deputy Premier urges Caribbean Rastafarians to help craft better societies - Stop Violence & Create Racial Harmony

Monday, August 31st, 2009
Tuesday was the last day of a five day 13th Summit of the Caribbean Rastafarian Organization on Nevis, but delegates who attended from across the region will leave the island with powerful words of Deputy Premier Hon . Hensley Daniel who called for their urgent assistance.

At the start of the Summit, Mr. Daniel called on the Rastafarians to help craft better communities and challenged them to utilise their ideals to join with civic organisations and governments to help craft independent and self reliant societies.

We need a society in which we could roll back expenditure and security; we need a society in which we can walk through the streets of all our cities whether we are in Kingston or in Nassau or in Georgetown.

We must be able to walk through our cities at all hours of the night and day without the fear of being attacked by our own black brothers and sisters,” he said.

The Deputy Premier who is also the Minister responsible for Social Development, Youth and Gender Affairs , referred to the violent trend that had been sweeping the Caribbean as a struggling one which should stop immediately.

We do not have the resources to police the community. It is far easier to teach young people to be able to control their anger and their urges

Violence is threatening and is shaking the foundation on which our society rests. It is making life too difficult for the region and the Rastafarian Movement with its long history of peace and goodwill, love of neighbour and friends, sharing and caring, has a very, very, very good chance to help us. I want to urge all of us, particularly in dealing with our young people to find a way to help us. We need your help urgently,” he said.

Mr. Daniel pointed to an ongoing workshop hosted by the Ministry of Social Development on Nevis for 20 young people in anger management, who had exhibited violent tendencies.

Rob Zombie Continues With The Horror Remakes: Taking On ‘The Blob’

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Rob Zombie sure loves his horror films and his horror remakes, though considering his track-record so far (”Halloween II” was totally forgettable and rote ), he might want to stick to original ideas and projects (as in the more successful, “The Devil’s Rejects” and “House of 1000 Corpses“).

But nope. The rocker turned filmmaker is just too attracted to remakes it seems — and or remake/reboots are just easier projects to get off the ground/ the temptation is just too much to resist.

Zombie is turning his “Halloween”-centric eye to a remake of the 1958 horror classic, “The Blob,” which was about a gooey and alive mass of goop that terrorizes a community (we always thought that was the strangest concept for a movie) and launched the career of our favorite one-note actor Steve McQueen.

Where does this leave ” Tyrannosaurus Rex ,” his bad-ass biker revenge movie that he originally set up at Dimension until they strong-armed him into doing the poor idea of “Halloween II”?

Probably dangling in the wind until the times change and some studio wants to give a chance to something that’s not a franchise. However, this is probably a good thing. It’s our understanding that since he directed “Halloween 2,” he’s been released from his Dimensions project and is free to set up the project shop wherever he wants. Rob, you should call up Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker studios, if “Machete,” can get made, why not ‘Rex’? — let’s not forget Zombie also did a fake trailer in “Grindhouse” so that connection is already established.

According to Variety , the picture will shoot next spring and Zombie hopes to modernize it so it’s not a silly joke to contemporary audiences. “My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing — that’s the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.” At least he’s aware. Producing the film is a company called Genre Co. that features former Dimension guy Richard Saperstein. Apparently they have the funding and about a $30 million budget. Not too shabby.

Where does this leave Sony’s proposed “Blob” remake, which was supposed to have a more “Ghostbusters” bent and was called “B.L.O.B.”? Hopefully dead in the water as that sounds kind of awful.

You might think this is just another horror movie, but Zombie tells the trade the picture is more of a “science fiction movie about a thing from outer space,” and that he’s been itching to leave the terror genre. Will Zombie tackle a “Halloween 3“? Obviously the above suggests he’s finished with Dimension Films and he just told THR that he’s ” done with ‘Halloween’ ,” but then again he also swore after the first one he’d never do a sequel .
Zombie’s been a busy man this year, in addition to ‘H2′ hitting theaters today (don’t bother) his animated film, “The Haunted World of El Superbeasto” is scheduled for release on September 22. — Additional reporting, Drew Taylor.

Apparently, Scott was at a party and hitting on everything in a skirt. (via Celebslam.com )

Scott was hitting on a blonde in a short black dress,” divulged a source at the event, an art show at Hollywood’s Milk Studios. “He was hugging her and rubbing her back. They were ordering vodka drinks for each other. He took a picture with her and even handed her his phone so she could punch in her number. Before he moved in on the blonde, Scott was chatting up a brunette. He was on the hunt — not faithful boyfriend material by any means. Kourtney’s just starting to show and Scott is already acting like a horndog. God help her once the baby arrives.”

Wow, what an awesome guy. I’m sure they’ll have a lovely relationship.

Rumor Control:AKA Tanya Isn’t in Eclipse

Apparently there is this magazine in South America that reported that actress Luisana Lopilato was cast in Eclipse in the role of Tanya. She’s the girlfriend of Canadian performer Michael Buble. They were recently seen in Vancouver ( shocker we know since her boyfriend is…er…Canadian) and someone put 2+2 together and basically came up with 5.

It seemed really fishy to us in that Tanya 1) is not in the book Eclipse as an actual speaking character, and 2) that part or anything remotely like it hasn’t appeared on any casting notices.

So we asked Summit. It turns out despite the fact that it’s being reported as fact in various quarters that it’s just plain rumor and nothing more. We confirmed with Summit that Luisana Lopilato in not invovled in Eclipse.

Guillermo on Hobbit 3D Rumors, His DP Choice, and Avatar!

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Remember that rumor from a few weeks ago that The Hobbit might end up being shot in 3D? Yea, it’s not true. That’s why it was a rumor - it was a bit hard to believe. Our friends at TheOneRing.net put in an e-mail with the big man himself, Guillermo del Toro, and got confirmation that they are not pursuing 3D on The Hobbit. After getting that out of the way, GdT did also confirm that they’re hiring Oscar winner Guillermo Navarro (of Pan’s Labyrinth, Night at the Museum, Hellboy II) as the Director of Photography of Hobbit. He also drops a juicy tidbit about James Cameron’s Avatar, to keep news on that going this week as well. Most of these updates and quotes come from the actual forums on TORN where Guillermo posts regularly. Here’s his statements on the 3D rumors, which put any speculation to rest (at least until …

Here’s his statements on the 3D rumors, which put any speculation to rest (at least until Avatar opens).

As a co-writer and director of this film (who works with the design teams, costume teams, creature teams, VFX teams every day of the week), let me be very clear one more time: we are not talking about 3D, we are NOT writing the screenplay for 3D right now- we are hiring my DoP Guillermo Navarro to shoot the film and we are not discussing 3D with him either or with WETA digital or WB or anyone else.

That should be a little less sidestepping, I hope. If after AVATAR the market may change and demands are put upon us, etc that is in the future. But if such things happen and we start discussing 3D down the line, I’ll let it be know here at TORN because that’s the proper way of doing things. But make no mistake- I’ve been living in NZ for almost a year now and we have not been discussing 3D.

When we do, I’ll make sure your source finds out. Thank You, Guillermo.

And speaking of Avatar, since that is almost always a controversial topic nowadays, Guillermo also briefly mentions that movie as well in response to MarketSaw’s claims . Avatar is currently being finished at Weta Digital in New Zealand, which is the same company that will eventually work on The Hobbit. His responses stem from the earlier discussions on the TORN forums about 3D and if it’s really the future of movies.

I believe Jim [Dorey of MarketSaw ] is defending what he believes to be true. He is a knowledgeable, passionate film-lover and perhaps his source in this case is also someone that would love to see the HOBBIT films happen in 3D. Perhaps so-

Jim has been right in the past and he may be right in the future. He is dead-on about the imminent conversion of film into an expanding 3-D field - at least in most blockbusters and I know of, at least, 4 or 5 major filmmakers preparing 3D films right now. Some of them seriously artistic and ungimmicky!!

I’ve seen AVATAR and I was absolutely blown away by it!! I myself expect to explore 3D soon enough- it is the future, just not my immediate future. I promise to you guys and Jim to let you know if anything changes in that or any regard…

And no- neither David Tennant nor Tom Cruise are Bilbo and we are not redesigning Gollum. My best wishes to all- GDT.

So there you have it! Not only does GdT confirm that the 3D rumors and those Tom Cruise rumors ( read about them here ) are a bunch of BS (for the time being), but he goes on to praise Avatar in a big way. I’m sure a handful of commenters will say “of course, he’s working with Weta, he has to say that,” but come on, give Avatar a chance! If almost every filmmaker out there has said its blown them away, why would they all be lying? I’ll admit that teaser trailer wasn’t the greatest, but it still might blow everyone away once it opens in December. At least just wait until you see the entire thing in IMAX 3D, as it was designed to be seen.

But let’s keep our focus on The Hobbit and Guillermo del Toro, since that’s what this update is about today. We still have three years to go, but it’s starting to get exciting. I can’t wait to find out who he cast as Bilbo!

Neil Gaiman Says Vampire Movies Should Go Back “Underground”

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Neil Gaiman

Vampire movies had been out of vogue since the 90s, taking a “dirt nap” until 2008’s Twilight regurgitated them back into popular culture in a big way. Now there’s a whole host of vampire-themed movies and TV shows to choose from, supplanting this decade’s zombie fixation with their pale-skinned supernatural brethren.

Fantasy author and movie producer Neil Gaiman (Coraline, Stardust) was recently asked about the importance of vampires in cinema , and he ultimately said that vampire movies should go back to the grave from whence they came. Gaiman gave credence to a few vampire movies, however, which he said helped to broaden the genre. One movie Gaiman cited was Roman Polanski’s Dance of the Vampires (1967), which called into question the long-established belief that vampires are afraid of crosses.

Dance of the Vampires has that wonderful moment where Alfie Bass as the Jewish innkeeper has been bitten and transformed by the vampires. He comes back, he creeps into the bedroom, and she holds up the cross, and he says, ”Lady, have you got the wrong vampire.” It was one of those occasions where something either crept out of the film and became a joke, or crept out of joke world and crept into the film.

Gaiman said that Lost Boys (1987) depicted vampirism as a state that’s not necessarily undesirable, which is similar to the way vampirism is depicted today.

And then in a sort of continuous transmutation, you had Lost Boys, which is essentially vampirism as wish fulfillment —- it was really the first time you can absolutely take a pin and point to these great vampire moments on celluloid or on video, or in print, whatever, where people really seemed to have looked around and gone, ‘What is the downside of this thing again? Hang on, you get to live forever, you get to be absolutely sexually attractive and you don’t have zits.

Gaiman explained that vampire movies can never be about gaining power on a grand scale, using 30 Days of Night (2007) as an example.

Even when you get to things like 30 Days of Night, you’re looking at people going and invading a little town that’s on the edge of nowhere and that nobody’s going to notice. It never seems to be about power. It never seems to be about taking over the world. Because the moment it does, it’s not vampire fiction anymore.

When it comes to the new wave of vampire fanaticism resulting from the Twilight phenomena, Gaiman couldn’t be bothered to comment. Instead, he predicted the imminent demise of the genre.

Vampires go in waves, and it kind of feels like now we’re finishing a vampire wave; at the point where they’re everywhere. It’s probably time to go back underground for another 20 or 25 years.
