The first performance show in season six of the most popular television show in Jamaica’s history will hit television screens this Sunday, on TVJ at 8:00pm. With eight of the 15 finalists Jamaica chose to wow them with soulful singing and powerful performances set to debut on the big stage; Digicel Rising Stars 2009 is a must see.

However, in the fifth week of the contest a 16th person will get the chance to become the next Digicel Rising Star, thanks to the Producer’s Pick. But has the series producer Sharon Schroeter made her pick yet?

“No, I wait until Kingston, when I see all the contestants that are chosen, and then I’ll go back and look through the tapes and decide,” Schroeter said.

She also mentioned that there are sweet changes coming to the set of the show.

“We’re going to be adding two additional towers, right now we have four, so we’re going to have a total of six of our LED DMX controllable lights that also respond to sound. We’re also going to have plasmas on either side of the stage now, as opposed to the video wall that we had last year. Our ‘star’ at the back of the set will be made up entirely of lights and the circular trusts that is normally around the star will now be hanging over the contestants head like a halo,” adding that the judges will also move from the side of the stage to directly in front of the stage and in front of the contestants, “intimidating them even more.”

The remodelling has even made its way to the Chill Room, and host KiKi will have a new set to cool things down. Schroeter said that the set will resemble that of a retro-diner, complete with booths and high chairs.

“Even though the Chill Room is back, we’re gonna give it a different feel. A kinda ’50’s diner kinda feel, and KFC and Pepsi will be more integrated into it and for Kiki instead of sitting at a couch, she would be sitting at a booth, with the contestants and she’ll be able to move around. Inside the Chill Room will be things like high tables and chairs for interviews with contestants and guests.”

The Chill Room will make its redesigned debut in the third week of the show, and so will some brand new themes.

“We’ve also added some new themes this year to the show, and we’re going to have an unplugged night so the contestants will have the chance to have a string instrument performing along with them. We’re also going to have a night called ‘Digicel Rising Stars My Way’, where the contestants will get to actually design their own performances.”

The only place to catch Digicel Rising Stars’ season six is on TVJ, with host Yendi Phillipps , and remember… the only way to ensure your favourite becomes the next Digicel Rising Star is to vote. ‘

Vince Vaugh and Jon Favreau’s belated re-teaming with their production pal, Peter Billingsley (the latter two co-produced the show “Dinner For Five” on IFC before they were “Iron Man“-sized superstars) has arrived in the form of the upcoming romantic comedy, “Couples Retreat.“

Billingsley (who always makes cameos in Favreau and Vaughn films like “Elf” and “The Break-Up“) make his directorial debut with a story essentially about four couple who take off on a tropical island resort. One of the couples is working on their marriage and by proxy the others are sucked into the resort’s couples therapy. Here’s the official synopsis:

Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Faizon Love star in Universal Pictures’ upcoming comedy Couples Retreat. Based on an original idea of Vaughn’s, the comedy follows four Midwestern couples who embark on a journey to a tropical island resort. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the other three set out to jet ski, spa and enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional. Suddenly, their group-rate vacation comes at a price. What follows is a hilarious look at real world problems faced by all couples. The film also stars Kali Hawk and Jean Reno.

It doesn’t look like it will re-invent the wheel, naturally, but it does look like another good time blast of dude-centric comedy. These guys are really great at riffing, Bateman is a perfect addition, and it should please in the exact way it’s meant to. presumably bringing in a boatload of female audiences as well who want to watch a fun, battle of the sexes. A.R Rahman of “Slumdog Millionaire” composed the score and the picture is due October 9, 2009.

Halo owner Babak Movahedi, a national board member of Stonewall Democrats who also sits on the Democratic National Committee’s leadership council, attended Monday’s gay leadership reception at the White House with President Barak Obama.

“There were leaders of different organizations and gay activists. About 300 people, maybe more,” Movahedi said Tuesday. “More than ever, I’m convinced the president is committed to our rights and equality, but I need to see more.”

The White House’s goal: “To calm the rage that the community has, especially over the brief with DOJ,” he said.

Obama’s Justice Department recently defended the Defense of Marriage Act, which forbids the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. Also, the act allows states not to recognize marriages performed elsewhere in the United States.

Gay activists were outraged when Justice Department lawyers invoked incest and other reasons why to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act.

“I find it unacceptable that the DOJ would write a brief so insensitive, and that no one from the Department of Justice or The White House would say this could be written differently and we will do better in the future,” said Movahedi, an attorney who lives in Washington and South Beach.

“I also found out yesterday that the White House council’s office had seen the brief and that makes me more concerned,’’ he said. “We expect more than that from this administration.”

Movahedi said Democratic leaders are asking gay people to be patient with Obama. “We will be patient for so long, but when we have a Democratic Congress and a Democratic president, what are we waiting for?”

According to fellow partygoers, Topher and Vanessa started making out heavily on the dance floor before leaving together at 1:30 am.

Topher started rubbing her arm, and Vanessa whispered in his ear and they exchanged phone numbers. Before long they were on the dance floor and putting the “dirty” in dirty dancing. Vanessa took off her shoes and held them in one hand, wrapping her other arm around Topher’s neck and the next thing we knew she was kissing him on the neck! In a bit of perfect timing the DJ spun ‘Sex on Fire’ by Kings of Leon and Vanessa turned her back to Topher, and did a super hot grind/dance while he played with her hair. And the casting news just keeps on rolling in. Just yesterday we announced with almost the same pun that old friend and sometimes beard-mate Jason Lee would be joining Kevin Smith’s latest endeavor. Today, it looks as though comedian Jim Norton and Michelle Trachtenberg are joining the fray. According to /film, Trachtenberg is joining A Couple of Dicks as the daughter of Bruce Willis’s detective character, and Norton is joining up as her step-father. I’m hoping for some Willis/Norton conflict on the horizon. One of the nation’s most popular music magazines is shutting down immediately. A representative for Vibe magazine, a print source for all things hip-hop and R&B, officially announced today June 30th, 2009 that the magazine will be ending their run today due to financial reasons.

Vibe magazine is closing its doors after months of struggle to find new investors and advertising sponsors for their print magazine. Tracy Nguyen, Vibe spokesperson, said the Vibe staff would be formally notified in a meeting at 2 p.m. She said she did not know how many people would be laid off as a result of the closure.

In a memo to the staff announcing the closure, Steve Aaron, CEO of Vibe Media Group, said that “The print advertising collapse hit Vibe hard, especially as key ad categories like automotive and fashion, which represented the bulk of our top 10 advertisers, have stopped advertising or gone out of business.”

Mike and Trent are back! Universal has debuted the first trailer for Couples Retreat on Apple today. Just looking at the cast, I’d say this is the ensemble comedy of the year. Here are the four couples: Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman, and Faizon Love and Kali Hawk. This seems like one hell of a wild, quirky, fun comedy, what more can I say? It also looks a lot like Forgetting Sarah Marshall but with four couples instead of just one. Upping the ante, so to say. I’m certainly looking forward to this. And don’t forget, A.R. Rahman is scoring Couples Retreat as well. Enjoy! A comedy about four couples who head to a tropical resort for a vacation. While one of them is there to work on their marriage, the others fail to realize that participation in the resort’s therapy is not optional.

Couples Retreat is directed by first-time director Peter Billingsley , who went on to become a producer for Vince Vaughn after starring as the bunny-costume-wearing Ralphie in A Christmas Story. This is now his directorial debut. The screenplay was written by Jon Favreau himself, the current director of Iron Man 2 and past screenwriter of Swingers. Universal is bringing Couples Retreat to theaters on October 9th .

When someone's career starts to take off, you often expect them to move away from supporting parts and take on only leading roles.  Not Amy Adams.  She followed up her Oscar-nominated supporting role in Junebug with a mainstream Disney comedy, Enchanted, but returned for another supporting role in Doubt (Oscar nomination #2).  With a romantic comedy, Leap Year, under wraps, she's signed up for another supporting role, as Mark Wahlberg's love interest in The Fighter.  The biopic has been circulating for some time before it finally nailed down its two leads earlier this year.  Christian Bale and Wahlberg will star as two brothers.  The eldest (Bale), who has drugs and prison time on his resume, trains his younger brother to a boxing title.  Melissa Leo, who was nominated last year for Lead Actress, will play Bale and Wahlberg's mother.  David O. Russell is directing, and the film will start shooting in Lowell, MA, in July.  With its talented cast of actors, biographical subject, and a talented director, this looks like a project angling to be one of the ten Best Picture nominees at the 2010 Oscars.

Here's an interesting combination: A 1973 teleplay as source material + the mysterious wife of Tom Cruise as star + a Guillermo Del Toro protege as director.  Put it together , and you've got Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, which will begin shooting next month in New Zealand.  I was disappointed that Katie Holmes didn't reprise her role as Rachel in The Dark Knight, and took it as a sign that she was swearing off the movie business, so I'm excited to see her turn up headlining another project.  Never underestimate the lasting audience loyalty that can result from starring in a teen nighttime soap like "Dawson's Creek."  Del Toro mentored Juan Antonia Bayona on the Spanish-language horror film The Orphanage (2007), to spectacular results, and he'll be taking on a similar role with Troy Nixey.  The first-time feature director will be working from a screenplay co-written by Del Toro, and the New Zealand location was chosen for its proximity to Australia, where Del Toro is working on The Hobbit.  Del Toro is also producing, ensuring he'll be able to keep a watchful eye on the film's progress.  The film's plot seems fairly typical, so it will be up to Nixey and Del Toro to create that tingly atmosphere of foreboding.  The plot follows a girl (Bailee Madison) who moves in with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Holmes), only to discover demonic creatures that first enchant, and then horrify her.  The girlfriend also becomes aware of their presence, but the father holds out, refusing to believe.  Horror that tries to be more than just a screamer is one of my great pleasures, so I'm always happy to see projects like this in the pipeline.
