Bridgetown Film Festival joins forces with Pan African Commission to establish Caribbean Identity in regional films

Sunday, May 31st, 2009
There are 55 entries for this year’s Bridgetown Film Festival (BFF), of which 15 are Barbadian. Kerri Birch, co-ordinator of the Festival, she says other competitors hail from Dominica, Haiti, Antigua, Suriname, US Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Jamaica.

The festival runs from June 10th to the 14th, with a proposed seminar from Yao Ramesar - the maker of Sistah God - and a seminar on acting to be held by BFF Co-Director Nala. He’s also doing a fund-raising journey for the festival, and it’s called Reel Ride ;-

Nala says a full rundown of the order of the films would be made known shortly - he also explained how donations can be made on the Reel Ride day itself and along the route;-

Director of the BFF , Mahmood Patel, is of the view the same way there’s a Pom-Marine Hotel to train folk in tourism, then why not have the same for Cinema? He cited examples with both Berlin and Cannes Film Festivals as 40% assistance from state, 40% from from the private sector and the remaining 20% is achieved via gates and receipts (fees to watch movies or attend seminars).

Patel also believes that like Sweden, the BFF can buy or sell movies for profit via commissions. However, there needs to be crucial legislation enforced quickly so as to encourage the private sector to want to invest in pictures;-

Deryck Murray of the Pan African Commission says his organisation had no problem helping the BFF out, since the festival falls within the mandate of the PAC to avoid the typical style of using Eurocentric identities as a benchmark;-

Vere Browne , although present initially in his capacity as a member of the BIDC, spoke as a citizen extensively and believes the potential is limitless for cinema to become important as tourism here… He sees film as an industry, therefore film is just as important as I.T. or any other business. Film uses people as a resource, with Barbados having 270-thousand or more in its population then unemployment could vanish if cinema is used as another plank to buoy Barbados apart from Tourism.

Browne listed the fact movies need camera-people, lawyers, marketing, technicians and other professionals. There is no reason, in the BIDC man’s personal view, that film should not be accepted as a legitimate livelihood. He also advocated for the BFF to register as a member of the Barbados Manufacturers Association and the Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Why?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

I was watching yesterday live from the House of Commons the onslaught by the British MP’s on Michael Martin, Speaker of the House of Commons, demanding his resignation because of the scandal surrounding MP’s expenses.
The poor sod was pathetic trying to hold on to the last shreds of his dignity as the MP’s were “slaughtering him with cotton” as a popular Greek saying aptly describes the torture he was putting himself through. And why? For the life of me nothing is worth this public humiliation.
Mate, resign and put a stop to this “death by a thousand cuts” torture.

Suri Cruise

The three-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes insists on using the implements for all her meals and refuses to use a knife and fork.

A source said: “Suri doesn’t like to eat with anything else. During a recent visit to bakery Le Pain Quotidien she wouldn’t touch her sandwich and pastries without them.”

Katis has now taken to carrying a small pair of chopsticks around in her handbag to ensure Suri finishes her food.

The source added to the National Enquirer magazine: “It’s the only way she can get her to eat.”

Suri is not the only celebrity tot to have special dining requirements.

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s nine-month-old son Zuma eats with a $4,000 diamond encrusted spoon, a gift from her No Doubt bandmates.

A source said: “Gwen loves it. She would never buy it herself, but that is what makes it so special.”

The specially-made sterling silver baby spoon was created by exclusive jewellers Chrome Hearts.

Weekend Box Office: Pixar Cleans ‘Up’, ‘Terminator’ Slacks Off

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Like clockwork, you can expect Pixar’s offerings to tower over the American animation competition. Fortunately for them, you can also count on them to tower over box office competition, as “Up“’s debut is the highest for the studio since 2003’s “Finding Nemo” which scored $70 million in the opening frame and went on to be the studio’s most successful movie. The $68.2 million number was probably goosed by the IMAX 3D sales, boding well for future Disney Digital releases, and with word of mouth strong and little animation competition until July’s “Ice Age” installment, expect “Up” to be one of the studio’s biggest earners.

While losing more than half its audience, “Night At The Museum: Battle At The Smithsonian” still did moderately well in the wake of the Pixar beast, bringing in $25.5 million. Cresting the $100 million mark this weekend, it still remains a bit behind the pace of the original, which opened smaller, but all things considered, this is a big winner for FOX. Coming in at third with a slightly disappointing weekend was “Drag Me To Hell.” Most likely midbudgeted, the picture still only brought in $16.6 million when most expected upwards of $20. It’s an unusual audience picture and its benefiting from great word of mouth, so its not too late for “Drag” to holdover if the studio has faith in its performance.

The news wasn’t so rosy for “Terminator Salvation.” Losing over 60% of its audience, it came in fourth with $16.1 million. Let this be a lesson in franchise management- some stories are finite to the audience, and while they may still carry value due to a marquee name (Schwarzenegger), the audience knows when a brand name is tapped out. Certainly, “The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” which mucked up and contorted series continuity, didn’t help out much in this department. With Halycon memorably breaking some kneecaps to get this made, don’t be surprised if the franchise merely lays low for awhile, though the operative word will eventually be, ugh, “reboot.”

At $209 million, “Star Trek” is not only the surprise winner of the May blockbuster sweepstakes, but also the year’s highest grossing film. It clocked in at fifth with $12.8 million and with enough support, there’s an outside chance it could lap “Terminator” in the coming weeks. “Trek” still isn’t a worldbeater considering a cost some tag as being in the neighborhood of $180-200, but a lot of times, the victory comes in the competition, and even with a possible wait for DVD to turn profit (international numbers remain so-so), Paramount is crowing about being number one. The optimism of “Trek” trumping the bleak apocalyptic appeal of “Terminator”- there’s a political thesis there. The rest of the lineup stayed fairly similar, with “Angels And Demons” at sixth crossing the $100 million mark- it probably finishes out at a respectable $120-$130, with international numbers just killin’ it. Irrespectably, it’s a piece of shit, and while its not relevant, we can’t say these things enough.

Summit Entertainment continues to expand “The Brothers Bloom” but still can’t get it into the top ten, as it resides at #11, with less than $1.5 to show for four weeks of release, and looking like the season’s biggest indie flop. Two Oscar winners and Mark Ruffalo do not a winner make in this atmosphere, and someone’s bound to get fired for this. Meanwhile, Best Foreign Film Oscar winner “Departures” debuted on nine screens to $73k, while IFC might have a moneymaker on their hands with Oliver Assayas‘ small family drama “Summer Hours,” which has tallied a three-week cume of $578k.

1. Up- $68.2 million
2. Night At The Museum: This Shit Again- $25.5 million ($105 mil)
3. Drag Me To Hell- $16.6 million
4. Terminator: Muted Color Palette- $16.1 million ($90 mil)
5. Lens Flare Future- $12.8 million ($209 mil)
6. Tom Hanks Hides And Waits For The Fire Department- $11.2 million ($105 mil)
7. Dance Flick- $4.9 million ($19 mil)
8. X-Men Origins: Wolverine- $3.9 million ($171 mil)
9. Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past- $1.9 million ($50 mil)
10. Obsessed- $665k ($67 mil)

Susan Boyle, the Britain’s Got Talent singing sensation has gotten so much attention since Susan’s first appearance on the show. It’s only right to post at least a couple of Susan’s really great quotes. Boyle says singing for the Royal family is a dream come true for her and you bet she’s going to do that.

more photos of Susan and her quotes below..

I was slightly brain damaged at birth, and I want people like me to see that they shouldn’t let a disability get in the way. I want to raise awareness - I want to turn my disability into ability.
Singing for royalty is a dream of mine - I’d absolutely love to sing for the Queen at the Royal Variety Show. All the contestants are very good. I will just have to do my best and see what happens.

Never let anything becomes a hurdle in what you want to become in life. We can all do it -  make our dreams come true!
