[TV] The Day Of The Triffids (2009)

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

The Day Of Triffids (2009)More and more, I find myself admiring British television for taking bolder steps in terms of promoting science fiction and fantasy. While US network television is often quick to pull the plug on budding science fiction shows that fail to demonstrate record-breaking viewers right out of the gate, it seems over in the UK, they’re getting more and more shows and TV movies of the geekier variety.

This goes way beyond Doctor Who (although it probably starts somewhere there). We have continuing shows like Being Human and Misfits and new ventures here and there like this one. It’s hard to puzzle out precisely why us geeks are getting more liberties over there as compared to the US, but I’m definitely not going to look a gift horse in the mouth anytime soon. For as long as this trend continues on, I’m definitely going to milk this cow for all it’s worth.

And then there’s Eddie Izzard!

First edition hardback cover Image via Wikipedia The Day Of The Triffids is a TV mini-series based on the John Wyndham novel of the same name. It’s not the first time anyone has adapted this story into a production. There have been radio plays, TV shows and even a movie based on this book.

In an alternative version of Earth, mankind has finally solved its energy woes by genetically modifying carnivorous plants known as triffids to allow people to harvest their oils as an alternative fuel. The highly organized farms around the world do their best to contain these vicious and rather intelligent things while using them as fuel sources. The movie starts with triffid expert Dr. Bill Masen (Dougray Scott) manages to thwart a sabotage attempt by an anti-triffid activist but not without injury. Bill gets injured by one of the triffids, potentially blinding him.

But because his eyes are covered in bandages, he’s one of the few humans on the planet who are spared becoming fully blind because of a freak Solar Eruption that is far stronger than before it. Bill realizes that he still has his vision and that the rest of the world is now blind, but he decides to make his way to the triffid compound to ensure the males are safe in order to prevent them from pollinating with the females. But he’s too late and the triffids are freely roaming the planet. Now it’s up to him and a few other sighted survivors such as radio personality Jo Payton (Joely Richardson). But naturally factions are beginning to form as people start to adopt a siege mentality by hoarding supplies and weapons. Plus you have Torrence (Eddie Izzard), someone who managed to survive a plane crash only to start to gather to himself amidst the chaos.

This two-part miniseries was certainly a well-made production despite the often damaging label of “made for TV”. In fact, the production quality seems to be even better than some movies that I’ve seen make it to the big screen, even during the big US summer season. And despite the blatant use of CGI to depict the triffids, the entire effect was largely believable. I never thought that I could consider a bunch of plants as villains and yet that’s what the behind behind this little TV movie managed to do.

The casting wasn’t too bad either. Dougray Scott did rather well as the troubled hero at the center of this tale, given his interesting acting history filled with mostly villainous roles. He’s not quite an anti-hero, but he’s certainly no angel either. I couldn’t care less for Richardson since she wasn’t that big a character. Besides, she certainly paled against the likes of Izzard. Eddie Izzard is Eddie Izzard and it’s hard to fault him for acting as, well, practically himself. Still, he does give Torrence a good amount of depth, even if we as viewers can’t understand why his followers still decided to stay with him despite him being, um, Eddie Izzard.

I can’t comment on the story itself in contrast to any of the previous adaptation or even the original book itself. But as for this particular TV mini-series alone, I have to admit that I’m largely happy with how things progressed. It’s your classic case of nature rebelling against the manipulations and abuses of man once the playing field is made equal. We don’t even need to understand why the solar eruption was able to blind everyone on the planet simultaneous despite the differences in exposure to the sun. In the end, that was just a plot device, one that was utilized to full effect. The movie is full of these quirky little plot devices that help things move along that reek of nostalgia for older tales that are no less gripping within a modern context.

The Day Of The Triffids was a great television event and a great story handled quite well overall. It gets 4 angry triffid males out of a possible 5.

Katie Holmes Doesn’t Want Anymore Children

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Katie Holmes isn’t certain that she wants more children. Adding fuel to the rumor mill fire that Tom Cruise isn’t actually Suri’s Dad (perpetual drunk Chris Klein is said to be her bio-Daddy ) Katie Holmes told the October issue of Marie Claire that she and Tom have no plans to pop out anymore kids. First Look: Steve ‘Captain America’ Rogers In Full Costume

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

The classic response to the first look of a costume is to mock and deride it, especially because in the comic book world, costumes show up a lot differently on screen than they do in amateur photographs. We caught a glimpse of a costume test for Chris Evans as Captain America back at Comic-Con, but it was ill-fitting (probably because they weren’t making custom fits for each of the possible actors). Here, we finally get to see him in action – riding a motorcycle that I want to buy immediately, hunting down Nazis, and being chased by what appear to be the black-suited versions of what pulled young James Kirk over in Star Trek. It’s difficult to tell honestly whether that’s Chris Evans or a stunt man. Still, you have to love the deliberate attempt to toss the black cloak over him before spy photographs are taken. The costume looks fine for what it’s worth. It’s sort of jarring to see someone in a mask and latex/denim jumper riding a motorcycle instead of, say, flying. However, it seems like the kind of thing that would look better in motion than in the broad daylight of a shoot. Otherwise, it just looks like he’s going to go trick ‘r’ treating in a very, very expensive costume. What do you think? Source: Daily Mail

Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender Reuniting for ‘Shame’

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

I have openly admitted before that I didn’t care for the art-house film Hunger, written & directed by British filmmaker Steve McQueen (not the classic actor, seen above left), but it was praised by many as one of the very best film of 2008 and I do admire what McQueen achieved (visually) in his feature debut. We’ve heard bits and pieces about his follow-up film, but now Variety has confirmed that McQueen will be reuniting with Michael Fassbender (who starred in Hunger) for a project that starts shooting in January titled Shame. Fassbender will play Brandon, a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. Written by McQueen and Abi Morgan (Brick Lane), Shame will examine the nature of need, how people live their lives and react to the experiences that shape them. Although I didn’t really like Hunger, I realize many cinephiles regard McQueen …

Although I didn’t really like Hunger, I realize many cinephiles regard McQueen as one of the best up-and-coming filmmakers, which is why we’re covering this. HanWay Films is handling sales and Iain Canning is producing through See-Saw Films with Film4. Canning says he’s “thrilled” to be producing a McQueen film, who he described as a filmmaker “not afraid to turn a mirror on the world.” And to tease you a bit more, HanWay’s CEO says that “Shame will tell a modern story that is deeply honest and provocative.” I’m actually curious to see how McQueen’s second film turns out.

Later this month Michael Douglas and Oliver Stone will return to the meanest land of all — Wall Street. The duo are back in the sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps to tell another story of greed gone bad. This time Gekko isn’t the top dog, but an ex-con using his slimy ways to once again influence those around him. If there’s anything he knows it’s the game, so check out this newly released clip that features Gekko explaining to Shia LaBeouf why “money never sleeps.”

After emerging from his stint in prison Gordon Gekko has become a popular author and media expert on all things financial. Labeouf’s character Jake is completely enamored by his charisma and his knowledge, and like most young brokers falls under his spell.

Money Never Sleeps takes a page out of the original’s script, with the only difference being time. It’s set 20 years after the first film and centers on an up and coming Wall Street trader who gets taught some hard lessons in the business. In the midst of it he unites with the infamous Gekko to save the financial community from the oncoming economic collapse.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps was originally scheduled to hit theaters in April but has been pushed back to September 24th.

What do you think of this clip from Wall Street 2? Are you interested in seeing the film?

True Blood Season Three Finale

“Trubies” across the nation are going into preemptive withdrawal as season 3 of HBO’s phenomenally successful and beloved vampire satire True Blood comes to a close.  The HBO marketing department does a tremendous job of stoking the fires of fan fervor while keeping the cliffhangers, hanging. Today’s clip and preview releases are no exception to that rule. They provide just enough information to get fans speculating on what the finale will reveal and how the show will lay the groundwork for next summer’s season 4.

Please note this preview does contain some potential spoiler elements.

From the looks of the trailer, HBO is continuing to stroke the fires of panic amongst “Team Eric” players. Though all can rest assured that Alexander Skarsgard will be returning as vampire sheriff and rake extraordinaire next season; the trailer is…

10 Must-See Toronto Fest Films That Probably Won’t Escape Toronto

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

The Toronto International Film Festival is an incredible bombardment of movies from every conceivable nook of the world, and while some of the festival’s 300 selections will go on to Oscar glory, many of them will never see theatrical distribution beyond their home countries. TIFF often proves to be the only chance to catch films of the latter type on the big screen, and because distributors have a nasty habit of picking titles based on their commercial value and not their quality, these films tend to be some of the vast line-up’s true gems.

So I’ve culled through the TIFF 2010 roster and - based on the descriptions provided and whatever else I might happen to know about these movies - I’ve selected 10 especially enticing films that I almost guarantee will never play in an American movie theater. Because you’ll be able to see Black Swan anytime you like come December, but that Radiohead-obsessed Japanese flick about a teacher who seeks vengeance on her students by infecting them with HIV is probably not coming to a theater near you.

Michael Caine Joins Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel is coming, we already know that Dwayne Johnson will star in it, and it’s good to finally hear some updates about the whole thing!

Today we’re here to announce that legendary Michael Caine is in final negotiations to join the cast of the sequel titled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island as well!

Movie will be directed by Brad Peyton (who was in charge for Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) and already has Josh Hutcherson reprising his role from the first film (explorer Sean Anderson), together with Johnson, who will play his mom’s boyfriend, on a quest to find the mysterious and monster-filled island and his missing grandfather.

Some reports note that “it’s not a cameo and that the role will see the actor in action mode, engaging in several chase sequences, including one involving giant bees.”

So, you already guess that Caine will play the grandfather.

We all know that Brendan Fraser starred in the 2008 film, but passed on the sequel because of a scheduling conflict.

Let us just remind you that the original 1959 version of Journey to the Center of the Earth starred James Mason and Pat Boone and earned Oscar nominations for best art direction, best effects and best sound.

This time, the movie will be shot in 3D, and filming will take place in North Carolina and Hawaii.

Filming starts in late October, with the targeted release date September 23rd, 2011.
