WASHINGTON — Defense officials say Pentagon chief Leon Panetta will certify that gays may serve openly in the armed services. News of his decision comes two weeks after top military leaders agreed that repealing the 17-year-old ban will not hurt military readiness.

The decision is not unexpected. The Pentagon has conducted months of internal studies and training to gauge how troops would react to the change triggered by a law passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama in December.

The Pentagon announcement is expected Friday, and Obama is expected to endorse it.

Repeal of the ban would become effective 60 days after certification, which could open the military to gays by the end of September.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been made public.

DreamWorks Animation finds a director for ‘Monkeys of Mumbai’

DreamWorks Animation has shown itself to be a worthy rival of Pixar, gaining accolades for a number of films, including last year's Oscar-nominated How to Train Your Dragon. Their latest project, Monkeys of Mumbai, just acquired a director .

Kevin lima Kevin Lima (Enchanted, Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians) will direct the Bollywood-inspired animated musical. Gurinder Chadha, who IMDB listed as director, is writing the screenplay with Paul Mayeda Berges. Chadha and Berges collaborated on Indian-inflected tales Bend it Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice. The adaptation of a story in the epic Sanskrit tale The Ramayana will be told from the point of view of monkeys. The primates must prevent demons from taking over the land.

One thing DreamWorks head Jeffrey Katzenberg will make sure of is that the movie won't "suck." During a webcast interview with Fortune , the studio head criticized recent movies, saying "Let me have a show of hands of people that would say the last seven or eight months of movies is the worst lineup of movies you've experienced in the last five years of your life… They suck.  It's unbelievable how bad movies have been." It's a rare candid comment, but as someone who's seen her fair share of tepid films lately, I agree.

Projects similar to Monkeys of Mumbai have had mixed success. Disney misfired when it partnered up with Yash Raj Films for the 2008 animated flop Roadside Romeo. Perhaps DreamWorks will be luckier. Like DWA's Kung Fu Panda series, there will be opportunities for the movie to draw inspiration from classic Indian styles of drawing. Movies like Blue Sky Studios' Rio attracted an international audience while focusing on a specific locale, Brazil, including song and dance numbers inspired by the region's music. Done right, Monkeys of Mumbai could easily attract the global audience that's becoming increasingly important to Hollywood's bottom line. American audiences, for their part, will get a cultural lesson from another country's story bank.

The Turleys have landed! After flying from Washington to Chicago, we flew first to Paris and then to Toulouse. We then drove to our friend’s villa outside of Condom (that’s right a town named Condom, which presumably has the lowest population of any town in France). We arrived around 6 pm and went to the Medieval Festival being held in Montreal du Gers – a truly enchanting experience with “fire spitters” and Medieval crafts in a tiny ancient town.

We started out badly. Flying coach on American was the perfect trial by ordeal. I am only six feet tall, but I had to position by knees off the sides of the seat in front of me to fit into the seat. Being wedged into these ridiculous seats at least took your mind off of the perfectly horrible dinner that followed. American has now passed over the line from a passenger airline to a cargo airline. As the latter, it was be roomy if you are a crate or critter. We then flew Air France to Toulouse, which was a completely different (and enjoyable experience).

Montreal Festival

Our home for the next week is a villa in Heux, France. Our friends own a spectacular home that overlooks the Pyrenees. Part of the home go back to the 13th Century and on the property is a Roman well. Most of the home dates back to the 17th Century as a fortified chateau (with arrow defensive slots that the kids have used to fire rubber arrows at us at dinner until we chase them away). It is surrounded by sunflower fields (in full bloom this time of year) and wine vineyards. Our room in the guest house looks out on what could easily be a Monet painting. The home has giant wood fireplaces that warm the home in the cool nights and large French doors to allow a cooling breeze during the day.

After our hosts welcomed us with local wines and a great dinner with fresh vegetables from the garden, including tomatoes that were addictive. Our host bought a Brebi petit Basque cheese from the Pyrennes that was divine. After dinner and copious amounts of wine, we took the kids to the nearby Montreal du Gers. They were enthralled (as was I) by the fire spitters who performed to the incredible drum work of two men in Medieval “fool” garb. We were the only foreigners. The whole town comes out for a wonderful meal and drinking to the sound of Medieval music. I cannot express the beauty and magic of the evening.

Today we are relaxing and the kids (and their two friends, Alexander and Jackson from Virginia) are swimming in a pool. Like the home, the pool overlooks the rolling hills of sunflowers. The adults are enjoying the local wines, which I will describe later (we are going on a wine tour with the owners of the most popular local wine).

It is only love for my hosts that prevents me to doing away with them in the Roman well and living here as long as possible before the arrival of National Gendarmerie.

Here are some photos from the festival (Courtesy of Photographer — and friend — Allison Mabe McBane):

Chris Brown on Condo Complaints: I’m Being Set Up By Haters!

July 22nd, 2011

Chris Brown is hitting back at allegations that he’s the neighbor from hell , saying peeps in his building are trying to smear him and make him look bad.

Specifically, he claims one of his neighbors scratched the initials “C.B.” into an elevator in an effort to make the singer look like a “reckless punk.”

Chris’ West Hollywood neighbors are not fans, complaining to the manager about noise, parking violations and the aforementioned vandalism.

Now, Brown has FIRED BACK on his Twitter page.

C. Brown Photo

“My neighbor carves my name in our elevator to incriminate me so it looks like I’m a reckless 22 your [sic] old,” the star writes.

As for photos showing Brown parking in handicapped spaces, Brown says, “My parking spaces in my building that were assigned to me when I [bought] this crib are now painted over with handicap and no Parking signs.”

His lawyer echoed this sentiment earlier in the week, saying the spaces are clearly Brown’s and that he is taking legal action.

“A person should be able to live in his or her own company of their house!” Brown adds, pleading once again for the haters to leave him alone. “I’m barely even home so these stories and accusations are so childish!”

We’ve known New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to be a pretty eco-friendly guy for a while now, what with his vegetarian tendencies and his fight to keep bike lanes . But I’m not sure any of us knew that he was this eco-friendly.

Mayor Bloomberg has donated a monumental $50 million to a campaign fighting against coal-burning power plants run by the Sierra Club. The gift will help the organization to boost the influence of its Beyond Coal campaign, and is also the largest donation to a green cause that Bloomberg has ever made.

The donation almost matches the amount that the Koch family has donated to keep oil and coal going, which is reportedly around $55 million.

The goals of the Beyond Coal campaign are these: shut down coal-burning plants and replace them with clean, renewable energy in order to cut America’s use of coal energy from the current 50% of total energy use down to 30% within the next decade. To find out more, go to beyondcoal.org .

With Brooks arrested, tabloid insiders open up about culture of misogyny, made-up gay scandals

By RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press

LONDON — With their former boss under arrest, tabloid reporters are beginning to reveal secrets of what it was like to work in Rebekah Brooks’ newsrooms.

Disguises, bullying, lies dropped into copy - all were part of the pressure-cooker atmosphere that prevailed, according to former journalists who spoke to The Associated Press.

Michael Taggart, who worked at The Sun in 2003, said the paper under Brooks was marked by "ruthlessness and misogyny."

"The reporters who were prepared to subject themselves and others to the most ridicule were the ones earmarked for success," said Taggart, who now works as a consultant for London-based MRM.

Insiders say the whatever-it-takes mantra was common across the tabloid world. But the pressure at News International - publisher of the Sun and the News of the World, the defunct paper at the center of the phone hacking scandal - was particularly intense.

Taggart described routinely participating in overnight stakeouts while at the Sun, something he said was rare at other papers he had worked for. The News of the World famously employed Mazhar Mahmood, who dressed as a hidden camera-wielding Middle Eastern potentate dubbed the "Fake Sheik" to trick scores of prominent figures into embarrassing indiscretions.

Taggart said other tabloids were just as hungry for scandal and celebrity, but they tended to rely on "great contacts, rather than covert operations."

At Rupert Murdoch’s tabloids, refusing to play ball meant being pushed to the sidelines. One reporter who said he went through that was Charles Begley, News of the World’s Harry Potter correspondent in 2001 when Brooks was its editor.

The then 29-year-old reporter said he wore a Harry Potter costume to work and officially changed his name to that of the fictional boy wizard, all part of the paper’s attempt to tap into the Pottermania sweeping both sides of the Atlantic.

On Sept. 11, hours after the fall of the twin towers, Begley was stunned to be chewed out by News of the World management for not wearing his costume. He said he was then ordered to attend the next news meeting in full Potter regalia.

Shaken by the demand, Begley never showed up, and soon afterward parted ways with the paper.

Brooks spokesman David Wilson said the former editor was "not going to answer specific allegations like this at this time," but described many of the stories being circulated as ridiculous.

Another reporter who spent seven years with the News of The World said the humiliation described by Begley was routine.

"It was very hierarchical," the former reporter said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he still works in the media industry. "If your immediate boss told you to drive to Norfolk and stand in a field … that’s what you were expected to do."

Attitudes toward women - never thought of as particularly enlightened at The Sun, a paper still famous for its topless page 3 models - did not improve under Brooks, Taggart said.

"We were regularly encouraged to refer to women with misogynistic names like ‘tarts,’ ’slappers’ or ‘hookers’ in our copy if there was conceivably any question mark over their sexual proclivities," he said.

"We were expected to childishly objectify women. So blonde-haired women were described as ‘beauties’ and generously chested women ‘looked swell’, whether they’d wanted the attention or not."

Faking facts was also part of tabloid life under Brooks, reporters said.

A third News of The World reporter, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he too is still working in the media industry, said some editors at the News of the World deliberately inserted bogus details to sensationalize copy.

In 2006, it apologized after an England soccer star was wrongly alleged to have participated in a "gay sex romp." More recently, the paper was forced to pay damages after wrongly alleging that motor racing boss Max Mosley had participated in a Nazi-themed orgy. Mosley acknowledged the orgy, but denied any Nazi theme.

Protesting was not an option, according to the reporter who worked at the tabloid for seven years. He said the paper "was no place to question what you were being asked to do, the answer was always the same mantra: Do what you have to do to get a result."

"Anyone mentioning ethics or refusing to be cooperative with dubious practices would have been effectively exiled by the news desk and labeled as ‘flaky.’"

Rob Harris contributed to this report.

Shia LaBeouf Joins Robert Redford for The Company You Keep

July 22nd, 2011

Shia LaBeouf

The Company You Keep is an upcoming Robert Redford‘s political drama, but it’s also one of the projects that will have an interesting cast on board.

Ok, I know we say that about every single movie, but what would you say about this combination – Robert Redford and Shia LaBeouf together on a big screen? If that’s not interesting, then what is?

So, according to the latest reports, LaBeouf will star opposite Redford who is already set to star as a former Weather Underground militant wanted by the FBI for 30 years who must go on the run when a young, ambitious reporter exposes his true identity.

As you already guess, LaBeouf comes on board to play the character described as “budding journalist who’s determined to make a name for himself.”

As we said, Redford is directing the movie which is based on Neil Gordon‘s novel. Lem Dobbs was in charge for the script and as we learned, the movie is already in preproduction and will film in Vancouver in September. Producer Nicolas Chatier said:

“This is an edge-of-your-seat thriller real Americans who stood for their beliefs, thinking they were patriots and defending their country’s ideals against their government” and added that:

“It its absolutely amazing to have Shia LaBeouf, arguably the biggest young star in Hollywood today paired with the global icon Robert Redford.”

At the end, here’s a little description of Gordon’s novel: “When limousine-leftist lawyer and single dad Jim Grant is unmasked as Jason Sinai, an ex-Weather Underground militant wanted for a deadly bank robbery, he abandons his daughter and goes on the lam.

As he evades a manhunt and seeks out old comrades, the author introduces a sprawling cast of drug dealers, bomb-planting radicals turned leftist academics, Vietnam vets, FBI agents and Republicans who collectively ponder the legacy of the ’60s. Gordon (Sacrifice of Isaac) skillfully combines a tense fugitive procedural, full of intriguing lore about false identities and techniques for losing a tail, with a nuanced exploration of boomer nostalgia and regret.

Alas, there are a few too many long-winded, semicoherent debates about the radical excesses of the era that inadvertently evoke marijuana-fueled dormitory bull sessions. Through these exchanges (and a little sexual healing), ideological opposites come together over a facile anti-politics of “national reconciliation.”
